Seoul city

Seoul is a striking metropolis where ultra-modern skyscrapers and high technologies stand alongside ancient palaces of the Joseon dynasty and Buddhist temples.
It is a city that never sleeps, offering students a unique educational experience in one of the most innovative and safest hubs in the world.
Thanks to its global leadership in education, culture, and digital technologies (K-pop, cinema, the beauty industry), Seoul annually attracts a massive number of international students striving for success in a global environment.
However, living in the capital of South Korea has its own specific features, requiring readiness for a fast-paced lifestyle.
In this article, we will take a detailed look at the key aspects of student life in Seoul—from the economy and housing to transport and climate.

💰Economy & Cost of Living

Seoul is considered one of the most expensive cities in the world; however, there are many ways for students to optimize expenses while maintaining a high standard of living.

Average student expenses in Seoul:

Housing Rental: Rental costs are quite high. University dormitories or "goshiwons" (small, compact rooms) are the most affordable options. A separate apartment in a good neighborhood will cost 500–900 USD per month plus a deposit.

Food: Food expenses amount to about 300–500 USD per month. Eating in university canteens and buying ready-made meals at convenience stores (CU, GS25) is a popular and inexpensive way to eat.

Transport: Seoul's public transport system is considered one of the best in the world. Monthly expenses for the metro and buses are around 50–70 USD.

Additional Expenses: Entertainment, cafe visits, cultural events, and personal purchases cost approximately 200–300 USD per month.

💡 Tip: Use the "T-money" transport card—it is universal for all public transport and allows you to receive discounts when transferring.

🏠Student Accommodation

Due to high real estate costs, students frequently choose the following options:

University Dormitories: The most preferred and convenient option. The cost ranges from 200 to 500 USD per month.

Goshiwons: Small, furnished rooms. The cost ranges from 250 to 400 USD. Ideal for those looking for budget accommodation with utilities included.

Apartment Rental: Requires a large deposit (key money). It is suitable for those planning long-term stays.

🚇Transport & Infrastructure

Seoul possesses a benchmark transport system that operates with mathematical precision.

Seoul Metro: A massive network of lines covering the entire metropolis and its suburbs. The metro is clean, safe, and equipped with free Wi-Fi.

Buses: An extensive network of buses (blue, green, red, and yellow routes) integrated with the metro system.

Bicycles: Seoul's city bike-sharing system, "Ttareungi," allows for cheap and convenient travel around the city along the Han River embankment.

🌦️Climate

Seoul features a distinct monsoon climate with hot, humid summers and cold, windy winters.SeasonTemperatureFeatures❄️ Winter (Dec–Mar)-5°C to -15°CCold winter, strong northern winds often blow.☀️ Summer (Jun–Aug)+25°C…+35°CHot, very humid summer with a period of monsoon rains.💡 Tip: In Seoul, it is very important to have seasonal clothing: a high-quality long down jacket ("long padding") for winter and light, breathable clothes for the humid summer. Also, keep an eye on the air quality forecast (fine dust concentration); it is helpful to install a local app for this.
